Blending theater and technology for an interactive experience

In partnership with:

An interactive theatre piece created during Culture Experience Days (CED). The setting: a museum at night. A guardian stands watch while, on a screen behind him, a live video feed shows an attic above — where a thief is silently at work. The attic is pitch dark, and only where the guardian points his flashlight does the image become visible.

The trick: the guardian's body was tracked in real time using a Kinect, and a mask was applied to lift the dark filter wherever he pointed — so for the audience, it looked exactly like a real flashlight illuminating a real room. The thief upstairs was played live by a second actor, unaware of exactly what the audience could see.

I was responsible for the full technical setup and development — Kinect body tracking, live video streaming, and the real-time masking system. Created with Maxime Roman, Charlotte Costes-Debure, Caroline Fournier and Mélanie Decroix, as part of CED by Adami.
